Suffering from anxiety disorder can be a debilitating experience, one that makes it difficult to experience day-to-day life fully. An increasingly popular form of treatment is CBD, which can help to reduce the symptoms of this disorder, giving you back your freedom.
What is anxiety?
Anxiety refers to a broad spectrum of disorders, that are each characterized by their own symptoms – generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), panic disorder, social anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). Although each of these disorders is unique, they all tend to include symptoms that create feelings of debilitating fear, stress, or worry. These illnesses can also have physiological symptoms, including an increased heart rate, increased sweating, and sudden tiredness.
How does CBD help?
CBD, also known as cannabidiol, is a type of cannabinoid that is found in cannabis plants. It helps to reduce feelings of anxiety by altering the brain state, by reverting it back to a more positive/neutral state. CBD does this by entering the body, where it interacts with naturally occurring cannabinoid receptors, CB1 and CB2. These receptors then affect the serotonin receptors in the brain, preventing the reuptake of serotonin at swift rates. Serotonin is also known as the happiness chemical, and increased levels help to boost your mood. Although CBD doesn’t necessarily facilitate an increase in the production of serotonin, it does help to keep it in your body for longer, increasing its effects. Through this chemical interaction, CBD does not just improve anxiety disorders, but also a range of other mental illnesses, including depression and schizophrenia.
Currently, only preliminary studies have been done on humans to attempt to understand the effect that CBD has on the experience of anxiety. Although CBD has shown to be an effective treatment option for rats displaying anxiety and stress, conclusions with that much certainty cannot yet be drawn for humans. Of the small studies that have been done on people, the research shows that CBD can alleviate both psychological and physiological symptoms of the disorder successfully.
CBD is a great treatment alternative
CBD is considered a successful treatment option for anxiety, and a great alternative to anti-depressants or other forms of SSRIs. Although CBD is not a cure for anxiety, it is known to help make living with the disorder more manageable. It does this by helping to alleviate many of the symptoms, but CBD does not target the root cause of the disorder. The effects of CBD are not permanent and currently, there are no long-term studies on the effect of CBD on patients with anxiety. This is due to the fact that the development of CBD as a medical treatment is relatively new, and has not been around long enough to measure these potential effects.
CBD dosage depends on the person
There is currently no universal CBD dosage schedule that is recommended to treat anxiety. Previous tests have varied in their dosage, from 25mg per day up to 300mg. Dosage should be worked out at an individual level, based on factors such as your body weight, and severity of your symptoms. It is recommended to start on a low dosage, especially if you are new to CBD. The dosage can easily be increased if you feel as though you are not experiencing the desired effect.
