How CBD can be used to help your dogs with firework anxiety

Does your dog hide under the table when the firworks go off on the Fourth of July?

Do you see your dog running anxiously around and feel helpless that you can’t do anything to sooth your pet?

CBD for Dogs around the 4th of July!  We all know that this is the number one problem around the summer holidays with our pups.

Any dog owner will know that fireworks can be a major source of stress and anxiety for lots of dogs. The loud noises and flashes of color are stimuli that your dog is not used to, which can lead to an adverse reaction. It can be a struggle trying to make your dog feel more comfortable, but there are a number of treatment options you can consider. One of these is CBD.

CBD stands for cannabidiol, a phytocannabinoid that is found in cannabis. This compound affects dogs the exact same way that it affects humans – by interacting with the body’s natural endocannabinoid system to create a response to a mental or physical condition. When it comes to stress from fireworks, CBD can help to increase the responses of CB1 receptors (part of the endocannabinoid system), leading to feelings of relaxation and calmness.

It’s important to note that CBD is not the same as THC. THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) is the psychoactive compound that creates a “high” feeling. CBD products contain very little to no THC (less than 1%), providing the therapeutic benefits without causing harm to your dog.

The CBD industry is rapidly developing products for human consumption, but there is also a growing demand (and supply) for pet alternatives. Currently, there are a number of different CBD products ready for purchase that are safe for pets, provided that you use them correctly. The most popular is CBD oil or pet treatments. A few drops of CBD oil can be placed in your pets’ food or even directly into their mouths for results, or you can offer your dog some CBD infused treats. It’s important to make sure that these products are designed specifically for animals, as regular CBD products for people may contain additives that could harm your pet.

The effects of CBD are not instantaneous, so try and give your pet some CBD around 15 to 30 minutes before fireworks start (if you can pre-empt it). If you have never given your dog CBD before and you are experimenting, start with the smallest possible dose, to avoid giving them too much. If you are not seeing any changes in your pet within 30 minutes, consider giving them a little more.

Although CBD can help to alleviate some of your pet’s stress and anxiety, there are still steps you should take to keep them safe while fireworks are going off. Try and keep your dog inside as much as possible. Remaining in a familiar environment can soothe your dog, and it also means that there is no risk of them being hurt by a firework, or running away. You should also try and stay with them, especially if you know that they are going to feel stressed. Your presence may also help to calm your dog, but it means that you can monitor them while they are experiencing the effects of the CBD, just to check that nothing goes wrong.
